From Deployment into Employment

‘VUCA’ (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity) was coined in 1987 by the US Army as it sought to find a new way of training its officers for warfare in the 21st century.  It has also, however, been increasingly adopted by the world of commerce as a way of training its own leaders.  As the Harvard Business Review commented in 2017: “VUCA describes perfectly what is happening in the global business world today”.

The VUCA concept and principles reflect the growing relevance and transferability of military leadership skills in the context of today’s business environment.

Our research has sought to understand the current market and attitudes towards veterans and specifically to appraise the key skills and expertise those coming out of the military possess.  We also examine the effectiveness of current initiatives to help veterans into employment and where more could be done.
